Jaguar Land Rover Extends Production Shutdown Due to Cyber Attack

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced that it will extend its production shutdown until September 24, 2025, following a cyber attack that occurred in late August. The attack, which was first revealed by JLR on September 2, 2022, has caused significant disruptions to the company's internal systems and production.

The cyberattack was claimed by a group of teenage hackers known as Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters. This loose network is formed from notorious hacker gangs like Scattered Spider, Lapsus$, and ShinyHunters, who have targeted major British companies in the past. The hackers are believed to have used ransomware on JLR's IT systems.

Data theft during such cyber incidents increases long-term risks, such as reputational damage and regulatory consequences. It is still unclear if any data was accessed by hackers during the attack, but JLR has not identified any specific group or actor for the attack.

The production disruption affects locations such as Solihull and Wolverhampton. In response to the attack, JLR has emphasised the importance of cybersecurity and business resilience for large manufacturers.

In a statement, JLR's Chief Information Security Officer, John McQuiggan, advised organisations to regularly test and update their business continuity and incident response plans. He also emphasised that business continuity and cyber defense should be indivisible.

McQuiggan further stressed the importance of ongoing security awareness, phishing simulations, and behaviour analysis of users in a human risk management program. Zero trust principles should be adopted to limit attacker movement within systems. Supply chain risk assessments should also be strengthened to mitigate cyber threats.

As the investigation continues, it is clear that the cyber attack on JLR highlights the ongoing need for robust cybersecurity measures in the manufacturing sector. For the latest news, analysis, and reviews on cybersecurity, follow ITPRO on Google News.
