iPhone 18 launch reportedly abandoned next year, replaced potentially by foldable iPhone version instead, according to report
Apple is set to shake up its device lineup in the coming years, with a potential game-changer on the horizon – a book-style foldable iPhone. According to reports, this innovative device could hit the market as early as next year.
Traditionally, Apple introduces its next-generation devices in September, and this trend might continue with the upcoming models. However, it seems that the focus could shift from the expected iPhone 18 launch towards the development of the first foldable iPhone.
The foldable iPhone is rumoured to be heavily inspired by the Galaxy Z Fold 7, featuring a 7.8-inch internal AMOLED panel, complemented by a 5.5-inch external screen provided by Samsung Display. The device is said to be incredibly slim, with a thickness of only 5.5mm and a weight of approximately 149 grams.
The design of the first iPhone foldable is rumoured to be durable, and it may come equipped with a dual camera setup. Another significant change could be the replacement of Face ID with Touch ID, making the device more accessible for users.
As for the cost, the first iPhone foldable could be priced around Rs $1,999, making it a premium yet affordable addition to the Apple family.
While the exact launch date for the first iPhone foldable remains unclear, Apple is expected to introduce five new devices under the iPhone 18 series in 2026. These are said to include the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the vanilla trim and more affordable iPhone 18e.
Interestingly, the vanilla trim and the affordable iPhone 18e are expected to launch globally in early 2027, not the first iPhone foldable. The iPhone 18 launch in 2026 might be skipped by Apple, as the company aims to solve the challenges with current foldable technology before market introduction.
Additionally, Apple is rumoured to be changing its lineup, potentially dropping the Plus model. The company is also expected to release the more affordable iPhone 17e later this year or early next year.
The report suggests that Apple is focusing on the first foldable iPhone, which will not be part of the iPhone 18 series. The details about the iPhone 17 series launch date have not been confirmed yet.
