Investment of $36.5 million secures IXI for the advancement of auto-focus spectacles
In the realm of wearable technology, a Finnish startup named IXI is making waves with its innovative product – the world's first autofocus eyewear. IXI, founded in 2021 by a team of experts in wearable technology, optics, and industrial design, has recently secured $36.5 million in Series A funding. The funding round was led by Plural, with participation from Tesi, byFounders, Heartcore, Eurazeo, FOV Ventures, Tiny Supercomputer, and IXI's existing investors.
The new funding will be used to complete the product development of IXI Adaptive Eyewear and kick off commercial operations. The glasses use liquid crystal lenses controlled by an eye-tracking system that detects the distance to the object viewed and adjusts focus in about 0.2 seconds, faster than the human eye.
The company, which rebranded from Pixieray to IXI in March 2025, is leveraging deep expertise from its founders who previously worked on precision optics and eye-tracking at Varjo. However, the development process hasn't been without challenges. IXI faces hurdles like ensuring lens transparency, lightness, and meeting medical safety standards required for prescription eyewear, as well as integrating batteries without adding excessive weight. Prototype improvements have addressed some image quality issues, and the firm is aiming to produce stylish, lightweight frames that resemble regular glasses to improve user acceptance.
Public demonstrations of the autofocus glasses are planned soon to showcase how this technology could eliminate the need for multifocal lenses, reduce visual strain, and potentially improve daily life for users. While still not on the market due to regulatory and technical hurdles, IXI is positioning itself to disrupt the eyewear market with this innovative product.
