International distribution of compostable single-serve capsule technology granted by OxBarrier
In the ever-evolving landscape of global packaging sustainability, the year 2025 has seen significant strides in addressing a pressing issue - the waste generated by single-serve coffee capsules.
One of the most notable advancements comes from OxBarrier, a company with a mission to 'Preserve with Purpose'. They have launched an international technology licensing program for their patented compostable single-serve capsule technology. This program aims to extend the technology's availability to global partners, including coffee brands and manufacturers, and facilitate international partnerships.
OxBarrier's technology allows brands to offer compostable capsules without sacrificing quality or shelf life. This is a significant step towards addressing the global waste challenge posed by single-serve capsules, which, despite contributing over US $58 billion to the market, generate an estimated 576,000 metric tonnes of waste every year.
The home compostable coffee capsule developed by Greiner Packaging and Constantia Flexibles, another company at the forefront of sustainable packaging, won a WorldStar Packaging Award this year. This recognition underscores the growing importance of sustainable packaging solutions in the industry.
Taner Ertan, global business development manager at Greiner Packaging, provided more information about the solution. By utilizing these technologies, customers can make progress in their internal sustainability commitments while meeting consumer demand for high-performance, compostable single-serve solutions that keep coffee products fresh.
Notable initiatives include the one by Podback and Morrisons, which involves installing return points across 411 retail locations. The top performing Morrisons store recycled 5 tonnes of coffee pods in just over six months, and this joint initiative has led to over 10 million coffee pods being recycled in 2025.
As the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in 2025 comes into focus, it is clear that progress is being made in increasing the use of reusable packaging in supermarkets. However, much work remains to be done to ensure that all single-serve capsules find their way into recycling or composting systems, rather than landfills.
In this ultimate guide to global packaging sustainability regulation in 2025, we celebrate these strides and look forward to a future where convenience and sustainability go hand in hand.
