Embrace AI! That's the trend sweeping across Russia, as more and more people integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their daily routines. A recent survey by MegaFon reveals Russians primarily use AI for practical purposes.
Two-thirds of respondents leverage AI for planning leisure activities, mapping travel routes, or picking a movie for the evening. While most aren't ready for deep, meaningful conversations with AI yet, they hate the hassle of planning on their own.
The study, conducted in April 2025, queried 3600 people in major Russian cities. It found that 79.1% of participants interact with AI daily through voice assistants, generative services, and recommendation platforms. The most common uses? Information searches (57.4%), text editing (27%), and learning (20.1%).
About two-thirds of respondents (68%) rely on AI for leisure activities, like selecting movies, discovering fun events, or even gift-picking. Nearly a fourth (24.1%) follow AI recommendations for movies and music, while every fifth (20%) uses AI for route planning and accommodation bookings.
AI isn't just a photography helper anymore, but a collaborative creator of creative content too. About 57.6% of users share content created or edited by AI on social media, from texts to images.
Moreover, AI is stepping up as an emotional support system, providing relief for anxiety, stress, and feelings of loneliness. Twenty-eight percent of respondents use it to combat anxiety and stress, while thirty-eight percent claim it helps conquer boredom and loneliness more easily. It's fascinating to see that some users are seeking AI's help with more complex mental health issues.
So, what do the Russians think about this AI assistant? They see AI as a convenient tool for navigating their daily routines but not a replacement for human interaction, with its trust, empathy, and intuition.
"Artificial Intelligence is gaining traction in smartphones," says Eduard Merishavyan, Director of Retail Commerce. Since the AI feature became a hot topic in 2023, major vendors began launching AI-enabled devices and OS updates. Russians took notice, and by 2024, MegaFon saw an 81% surge in AI-equipped device sales compared to the previous year. This trend shows no signs of slowing.
