India Mandates Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems in EVs by 2027
In a significant move aimed at enhancing road safety, the Indian government has mandated the installation of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (AVAS) in electric vehicles (EVs). This system, designed to produce artificial sound for quiet EVs, will be compulsory for all new and existing models by October 2027.
AVAS, which works by emitting an externally audible sound when EVs are moving slowly or reversing, will aid in pedestrian and cyclist detection. The system must comply with AIS-173 standards for audibility, ensuring uniformity in the artificial sound emitted by vehicles.
The mandate for AVAS in India aligns with international safety benchmarks already adopted by the United States, Japan, and the European Union. All new electric vehicle models manufactured after October 2026 must be fitted with AVAS, with existing models in production required to follow suit by October 2027. The system activates automatically when EVs operate at speeds of up to 20 km/h, aiding detection in quiet operation ranges.
In addition to AVAS, the removal of the spare tyre obligation is proposed for vehicles fitted with tubeless tyres, including cars, three-wheelers, and quadricycles. These changes, aimed at improving safety and reducing vehicle weight, will significantly impact the EV industry in India.
