In the debut of 'Marvel Rivals', which Chrono Tokens are forfeited and retained.
Marvel Rivals enthusiasts might want to be mindful that they won't retain every currency they're accumulating during the ongoing season zero. Although some will stay, NetEase has recently unveiled an article detailing which ones will persist, which ones will disappear, and the mechanism behind it all. Here are the main points:
- The Premium Battle Pass won't expire. However, to inspire completing the Battle Pass within its specific season, you'll have to obtain Time Tokens again in the upcoming season to unlock items within it after the term is over. They encourage engaging with the new season's Battle Pass due to its new theme.
- You won't be able to buy past Premium Battle Passes in a new season even if the ones you've bought don't expire. They mention these passes and the items inside transforming into an "inevitable relic," thereby, instilling FOMO.
- If you have surplus Time Tokens when the season concludes, Rivals will automatically claim rewards on the Battle Pass until they're exhausted, provided you don't declare them in time yourself. However, any leftovers following the automated redemption will vanish.
- If you've used real money to acquire extra Time Tokens, they've devised a strategy to "protect" these obtained Tokens. This gets more intricate. The amount preserved will be the lesser of the remaining Tokens and the total purchased with Time Tokens during the season. They will be delivered through in-game mail. These obtained Tokens will continue to persist in subsequent seasons. These are not Time Tokens you "purchased" or received at a discount in the Battle Pass. Only the ones you literally bought with Time Tokens.
They present a mathematical problem as an illustration:
- "Suppose you spend a total of 1,000 Time Tokens to secure 1,000 Chrono Tokens in the present season. Then, the season ends, and the automatic item redemption is completed. Here’s what transpires subsequently:
- If 500 Chrono Tokens remain, then these 500 Chrono Tokens will be preserved for the next season.
- If 1,500 Chrono Tokens remain, then the 1,000 purchased Chrono Tokens will be preserved for the next season."
Simple, right? Not quite. But if you want to apprehend the nuances, they don't want you saving earned Chrono Tokens between seasons, thus they will be spent automatically or erased during the transition. However, they also don't wish to discourage people from investing actual money on Chrono Tokens, so those will carry over. Though even then, there's some perplexing math to work through, and I question whether this will be streamlined eventually. It really should be.

Marvel Rivals has several rival games that players might find interesting, offering a different take on the collectible card game genre. In the recent NetEase article, it was clarified that while some in-game currencies will carry over to the next season, such as purchased Time Tokens, other currencies like earned Chrono Tokens will be spent automatically or erased during the transition, potentially causing confusion for some players.
