Improved pricing and range for the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV set for launch
The automotive market is buzzing with the arrival of the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that promises to deliver power, versatility, and luxury. Here's a closer look at this exciting new offering.
Power and Performance
The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a total output of 300kW and a colossal 750Nm of torque. This powerful setup enables the vehicle to tow a braked trailer of up to 3,500kg, making it an ideal choice for those who need a vehicle that can handle heavy loads.
Battery and Charging
The Cannon Alpha PHEV is equipped with a 37.1kWh plug-in hybrid battery, providing an electric-only range of approximately 115km. The vehicle supports DC fast charging up to 50kW and features vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability with up to 3.3kW discharge.
Off-Road Capability and Towing
The Cannon Alpha PHEV offers torque-on-demand 4WD with a nine-speed auto transmission, including front/rear diff locks and low-range gearing, making it suitable for off-road use. The vehicle's strong towing capacity and robust hardware make it a reliable choice for those who require a vehicle for heavy-duty tasks.
Interior and Features
While the Cannon Alpha PHEV focuses somewhat on luxury, it doesn't skimp on practicality. The vehicle features a 14.6-inch touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a host of other features such as seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, traffic jam assist, driver fatigue monitoring, traffic sign recognition, hill ascent/descent control, a 360-degree camera, rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring, and more.
Warranty and Servicing
The Cannon Alpha PHEV comes with a seven-year/unlimited km warranty, and servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km, costing about $4615 over seven years.
Comparison with Competitors
Compared to the BYD Shark and Ford Ranger PHEV, the Cannon Alpha PHEV stands out for its powerful 300kW combined output, large 37.1kWh battery with long electric range, strong off-road hardware, and V2L capability. The BYD Shark is noted for more practical packaging and better drivetrain and chassis calibration, while the Ford Ranger PHEV, although not detailed here, is traditionally a strong competitor with solid towing and a balanced hybrid powertrain, but likely with smaller battery capacity and electric range.
The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV is set to be available for delivery in May 2023, with the Lux model priced at $61,490 drive away and the higher-end Ultra model priced between $67,990 and $71,090, depending on location.
