Hoppegarten Recovers from Cyberattack, but Challenges Persist
The municipality of Hoppegarten, Germany, is gradually recovering from a cyberattack that struck in August 2025. Central services like email, phone lines, and citizen services have been restored, but the town continues to grapple with the aftermath six weeks later.
The attack, which is still under investigation by the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) for attempted computer sabotage, targeted the municipality's data. Attackers attempted to encrypt the data, potentially for extortion purposes. As of now, the perpetrators remain unknown.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of public administrations to digital attacks and the time-consuming process of restoring affected systems. While administrative operations have largely returned to normal, full restoration of all IT services is still outstanding. Communication with schools and daycare centers continues to face restrictions.
Hoppegarten, with around 18,000 inhabitants, joins a growing list of German municipalities targeted by cybercriminals recently. The municipal administration continues to work towards a full recovery, ensuring the safety and security of its digital infrastructure.
