Helicopter removes telecommunications tower's peak in Schwerin

Schwerin Broadcast Tower's Top Section to be Removed by Helicopter in August

Deutsche Funkturm, a leading operator of radio sites across Germany, has announced that the top section of the Schwerin Broadcast Tower will be removed by helicopter in August 2025. This decision was made due to the tower's height and location, making a helicopter removal safer and more practical than conventional cranes or ground-based demolition.

The Schwerin tower, a well-known city landmark and an important radio site in the region, currently stands at a height of 125.68 meters. After the removal of the top section, which consists of a steel mast 11.04 meters long and the GFK-Zylinder top section, approximately 9.68 meters long, the tower will stand at a height of 116 meters.

The GFK-Zylinder, a fiberglass cylinder no longer needed for radio services, will be dismantled by DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH. The radio services previously housed in the GFK-Zylinder now transmit from a nearby transmission mast.

Despite the dismantling works, no disruption to media or communication services is expected. The Schwerin tower remains an essential part of the radio infrastructure for services such as directional and mobile radio.

The approval process for the dismantling was carried out in close coordination with the State Office for Culture and Heritage Preservation to ensure the preservation of the tower's historical significance.

Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, a company that builds and operates infrastructure for mobile network providers, broadcast stations, and radio networks, is responsible for the dismantling of the GFK-Zylinder.

While the exact purpose of the dismantling is not yet clear, the removal of the top section could be a step towards the tower's complete dismantling or modernization. The works are weather-dependent and scheduled for mid-August.

This method of helicopter removal of tall structures is a common technique for safely dismantling high, difficult-to-access sections without extensive disruption or requiring heavy ground equipment. The Schwerin Broadcast Tower is just another example of how such techniques are becoming increasingly common in the field of infrastructure maintenance and modernization.

In light of the Schwerin Broadcast Tower's dismantling, the Removal of the fiberglass cylinder GFK-Zylinder, no longer needed for radio services, will be handled by Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, a company renowned for constructing and operating infrastructure in the technology, finance, and telecommunications industry. After the dismantling, the tower will stand at a reduced height, offering potential opportunities for its modernization or further adjustments in the future, reflecting advancements in the technology industry.
