Harvard selects Studio Technologies for sports broadcast productions

HAVARD YARD, MA.Harvard University's athletics department has give a warm welcome to Studio Technologies as they've integrated Dante-enabled gear into their live sports broadcast productions.

The gear lineup includes the Model 204, Model 205 Announcer's Consoles, Model 5205 Mic/Line to Dante Interface, and the top-notch Model 5422A Dante Intercom Audio Engine. All these goodies help produce approximately 325 live sports casts yearly, covering home games for 40 out of their 42 varsity teams.

Thanks to advances in technology, Harvard Athletics has made a switch to a remote production model, getting rid of the need for on-site setup. Now, a pair of central control rooms, situated at their basketball and hockey facilities, handle the majority of the university's sports casts.

With Studio Tech's Dante-enabled equipment, commentators can connect effortlessly from any spot on campus utilizing the university's advanced, unified network system. According to Imry Halevi, senior associate director of athletics, "We used to haul mountains of gear to each event, but Studio Technologies' Dante-enabled commentator stations have made things a breeze. No matter the sport - be it fencing, volleyball, football, or whatever - the system remains flexible and reliable."

One significant boost to Harvard's setup is the integration of the Model 5205, which offers microphones with capabilities for both phantom power and transformation to Dante digital. This modification has made it simpler to catch ambient audio and resolve previous issues related to its capture, such as enabling remote gain adjustments with Studio Tech's STcontroller software. Halevi added, "In the past, we'd need to send someone to fiddle with mixers on-site. Now, we handle it from the comfort of our central control room, saving precious time and effort."

Harvard's communication system has also gotten a facelift thanks to Studio Technologies' beltpacks and intercom solutions. Team members can now communicate effortlessly between directors, camera operators, and commentators. The adoption of the Model 5422A as both an intercom booster and a Dante leader clock has ironed out previous network instability issues, making for more streamlined operations.

Darting from heavy-hitters like football, basketball, and hockey to lesser-known sports, such as skiing, sailing, water polo, and fencing, Harvard has built dedicated commentary booths laced with Studio Tech gear enabling commentators to dish out insights remotely. Enhanced reach and engagement, especially among alumni and prospective students, is a direct result of these efforts.

Harvard's sports casts can be found on ESPN thanks to the Ivy League's agreement with the network, with select casts airing on New England Sports Network (NESN), a Boston-based regional sports network. The athletic department has also experimented with fresh formats, like social media-focused vertical casts for tennis, capitalizing on Studio Tech's Dante audio solutions for smoother production.

Saying, "Our goal is to share the stories of our student-athletes and coaches, and high-quality broadcasts are part of that," Halevi remarks that Studio Technologies' solutions have "played a key role in helping us maintain excellence within our budget restrictions."
