Hannover Upgrades Emergency Sirens with €5M Modern Network
Hannover is beefing up its emergency warning system with a modern siren network. The city is investing around 5 million euros in the project, with the state of Lower Saxony contributing 1.16 million euros. The first test of 80 sirens is set for German Civil Defence Day on September 12.
The new sirens, to be installed on municipal land or buildings, will emit distinctive rising and falling tone sequences with pauses. This design aims to effectively warn and wake up residents in case of emergencies. All facilities are expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
Dr. Axel von der Ohe, Hannover's First Mayor and Head of Finance, Order and Fire Department, stresses the importance of a modern siren warning system for quick emergency alerts. Christoph Bahlmann, Director of the Fire Department Hannover, advises that while the sirens may evoke unpleasant feelings in some, public awareness of the test can help mitigate this.
The installation of the new siren network in Hannover is a significant investment in the safety of its residents. With the first watch (test) of 80 sirens on September 12, the city takes a step towards enhancing its emergency warning capabilities.
