Hamburg's EV Charging Infrastructure Lags in Outskirts
Hamburg, renowned for its progressive stance on sustainability, is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Despite a higher share of alternative drive vehicles and a significant increase in public charging points, the outskirts of the city lag behind the city center in charging station availability. ADAC Hansa e.V. has called for more balanced development to ensure equal opportunities for e-mobility across the city.
As of September 2025, Hamburg boasted 3,788 public charging points, marking a 27% increase from the previous year. This growth is commendable, but it's not evenly distributed. The outskirts of the city have fewer charging stations, creating a disparity with the city center. ADAC Hansa e.V., a prominent automotive club, has urged local authorities to address this imbalance.
Hamburg's commitment to e-mobility is evident in its vehicle registration data. As of now, 10.4% of registered passenger cars are hybrids, and 4.4% are purely electric. This exceeds the national average, indicating a strong demand for charging infrastructure. Looking ahead, Hamburg plans to have around 7,000 public charging points by 2027, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable transportation.
Hamburg's e-mobility journey is progressing, with a significant increase in public charging points and a higher share of alternative drive vehicles. However, the city must address the disparity in charging station availability between the outskirts and the city center. ADAC Hansa e.V.'s advocacy for a more balanced infrastructure is crucial for creating equal opportunities for e-mobility across Hamburg.
