Halle (Saale) is aggressively advancing the broadening of fiber-optic networks

In a significant move for digital advancement, Minister Dr. Lydia Hüskens announced additional financial support for the implementation of digital projects in Halle (Saale) on September 17, 2025. The city's Mayor, Dr. Alexander Vogt, signed a cooperation agreement with five telecommunications companies – Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Glasfaser, Deutsche GigaNetz, 1&1 Versatel, and Antec-Kabel GmbH – aiming to expand the city's fiber optic connections infrastructure.

The commercial expansion of fiber optic connections by these companies is set to begin in stages from 2026. This strategic partnership is an essential step towards making Halle (Saale) a future-proof infrastructure and strengthening its economic location.

The agreement focuses on an economic expansion starting in 2026 without subsidies. Minister Hüskens aims to supply all households and companies in Halle (Saale) with fiber optics by 2030. The state plans to provide funding for the fiber optic expansion of the Ziegelwiese and the equipment with free WLAN this year.

Currently, over 80% of buildings in Halle (Saale) have fiber optic connections, and 82% of private households already have a fiber optic connection, either directly to their apartment or at least to their building. The city is already a role model for many large cities in Germany when it comes to fiber optic supply.

The cooperation is an important prerequisite for creating a future-proof infrastructure and strengthening the economic location of Halle (Saale). The FTTH connections laid by the telecommunications companies enable data transfers of up to 1,000 Mbit/s.

Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt stated that fiber optic connections are essential for mobile work, economic growth, competitiveness, modern education, and quality of life in their city. The more the commercial expansion is pushed, the less public money will have to be spent on the goal of comprehensive fiber optic supply.

The state plans to financially support the connection of around 600 underserved addresses in Halle-Ost. The focus of this additional support is on the fiber optic expansion of the Ziegelwiese and the expansion of previously digitally underserved addresses in Halle-Ost.

The representatives of the telecommunications companies praise the good, goal-oriented, and customer-oriented cooperation with the city of Halle (Saale). The expansion of fiber optic connections by the telecommunications companies is expected to help Halle (Saale) reach its fiber optic supply target in a few years.

The commercial expansion of fiber optic connections by the telecommunications companies is set to begin in stages from 2026. The agreement does not involve any funding from the city. This partnership is a significant step towards a digitally connected Halle (Saale) and a stronger economic location for the city.
