Greifswald Now Accepts Only Digital Photos for New Personal Documents

Since May 2025, the city of Greifswald has introduced a new rule for personal documents. Only digital photos are now accepted for new applications, including those for babies and toddlers. This change aims to streamline the process and enhance security.

The digital photos must be of high quality and meet specific criteria. They cost 6 euros each and can be taken directly at the Greifswald city administration office. The necessary equipment has been set up and tested in the registration office, ensuring a smooth process.

The digital photos are uploaded to a secure cloud and accessed using a unique QR code. This method ensures the photos' integrity and prevents tampering. Currently, digital photos are used for ID cards and passports, but not for driver's licenses or other documents.

For babies and toddlers, it is recommended to use a professional photo service provider to ensure the best possible photo quality.

In Greifswald, digital photos have become the standard for new personal documents, costing 6 euros each. The city has implemented secure cloud storage and QR code access for these photos. While this change initially affects ID cards and passports, the city may consider expanding its use to other documents in the future.
