Google Contact List Undergoes Material 3 Expressive Makeover
Google has been on a mission to revamp its apps with the Material 3 Expressive design, a modern and tactile approach that brings containerized layouts, pill-shaped buttons, animations, and bolder visuals. In this article, we'll take a look at the apps that have been updated and the changes they've undergone.
Starting in late July 2025, Google Keep received a Material 3 Expressive redesign, featuring bolder elements, fluid animations, and a floating action button (FAB) that expands into a quick note creation menu. The design uses taller buttons and toolbars with rounded corners and subtle elevation to create a more tactile, modern feel.
Google Calendar incorporated Material 3 Expressive with time slots surrounded by rounded containers replacing faint lines, plus a solid background layer in the primary Dynamic Color. The UI uses softer pill-shaped elements and container styles throughout views such as Day, Week, and Month.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides updated their editor interfaces, adding expressive progress indicators, pill-shaped buttons, and a modernized Format sheet with split button components aligned with Material 3 Expressive guidelines.
Google Meet has a widely rolled out Material 3 Expressive redesign with large/tall cards for each call on the home screen, oversized voice and video call buttons on the pre-call screen, and pill-shaped UI elements for names and controls.
Google Calculator received a Material 3 Expressive update including new button styles, bigger buttons closer to screen edges, new colors, and a condensed font for numbers, improving readability and interface energy.
Joining this list is Google Contacts, which is also set to receive a Material 3 Expressive redesign. Organize and search results in Google Contacts are now arranged in rounded cards, and the Call, Message, Video, Email, and Location sharing shortcuts on the contacts page are now pill-shaped buttons. The bottom bar in Google Contacts is now shorter.
However, there are no changes to the "Create contact" page in Google Contacts, and the Highlights tab remains mostly unchanged. The Google Contacts update (version 4.6.1.x) is now widely rolling out via the Play Store.
In addition, Google Contacts is receiving a container treatment, with containers being more prominent due to Material 3 Expressive. Google Wallet tap-to-pay animation is also receiving a Material 3 Expressive redesign.
Lastly, Google Calendar for Wear OS is getting a Material 3 Expressive update, with Contacts and Keep Tiles next. Google Docs is getting a Material 3 Expressive progress indicator and tweaks. Google has reversed the Material You preference for taller navigation in Google Contacts, making it more user-friendly.
These updates aim to provide users with a more cohesive and modern experience across Google's suite of apps, aligning with Google’s evolving design language.
