Germany Tightens Drone Rules After Airport Incidents

Drone regulations in Germany have been tightened following a spate of incidents at Cologne-Bonn and Düsseldorf airports. From January to August 2025, there were twelve and nine weather-related incidents respectively, highlighting the need for stricter controls.

Germany has two types of drone pilot licenses, each with its own set of rules. Drones must be registered with the Federal Aviation Authority if they weigh over 250 grams or have a camera. They can only be flown within line of sight and up to 120 meters in height.

Private drone operations near airports are heavily restricted. A mandatory distance of up to five kilometers is enforced, depending on the approach direction. Authorized operators must obtain special permission from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA). Misconduct can result in fines up to 50,000 euros and imprisonment.

Drones can only be flown over parks and open areas, not residential properties or private gardens. They are prohibited over nature reserves, highways, hospitals, crowds, railway installations, power plants, and prisons. Private individuals can report drones in restricted zones to the police or local authorities.

The 'small drone pilot license' can be obtained free of charge online from the Federal Aviation Authority, but pilots must adhere to strict rules to ensure safety and compliance with the law. With the increase in drone incidents, authorities are urging pilots to familiarize themselves with the regulations and operate responsibly.
