Toot your own horn! Germany isn't exactly slacking in the AI job market, but it's the growth rate that's leaving something to be desired. According to Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the nation could boost its overall productivity by a whopping 16% with AI. But, if companies don't embrace AI more, well, they might lose their international competitive edge.
Last year, there was a slight dip in online job listings, a trend echoed in a report by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Institute of the German Economy (IW). It appears many companies feel left behind in the AI race. In a Bitkom survey, many companies admitted they already felt stuck in the mud regarding AI, with developers being particularly in demand.
Enter Michael Hüther, director of the Institute of the German Economy. He suggests companies should shake things up, putting their business models to the test, and work on building employee competencies. Hüther also pushes for bureaucracy-free AI regulations.
When it comes to cities with the most job ads referencing AI, Munich takes the cake with a 4.5% share of the total market. Karlsruhe and the district of Böblingen come in right behind. The southern and southwestern regions seem to be an "AI hotspot," with the automotive industry and its suppliers playing a significant role. Regions like the Rhine-Ruhr area and Berlin also have bright spots. But, rural areas are trailing behind.
For the study, over 60 million online job ads were analyzed between 2019 and 2024. However, Germany might not be losing ground in the AI job market in absolute terms. Rather, its growth rate may be slower compared to some leading European counterparts, and its overall labor market shows some signs of worry about future job cuts due to AI.
Insight:
While Germany is making progress, its growth rate is slower compared to leading European counterparts like the UK. Germany's AI job market shows signs of volatility, and many companies anticipate job cuts due to AI, particularly in manufacturing. However, the tech sector—especially in Berlin—is alive and well, actively seeking AI talent.
