Germany Clarifies Class B Driving License Rules for Beginners

German driving regulations have clarified rules for Classroom B licenses. This license, suitable for beginners, allows driving vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and includes extensions for trailers and motorcycles.

Classroom B, ideal for beginners, permits driving vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It also covers Class AM and L, enabling the operation of certain motor vehicles and tractors.

With the B96 extension, the weight limit for a car-trailer combination increases to 4.25 tonnes, perfect for transporting heavier loads. For trailers, Classroom B also covers those with a permissible total weight of up to 750 kilograms.

The B196 extension allows driving motorcycles of Class A1, which are motorcycles and scooters with up to 125 cm³ displacement and a maximum of 11 kW (15 PS) engine power. However, this extension is only recognized in Germany and not valid for trips abroad.

A peculiarity of German driver's license law allows driving three-wheeled scooters with a Classroom B license, but helmet use is mandatory.

For those aged 25 and above with at least 5 years of Classroom B experience, direct access to Class A unrestricted license is possible, not just A1. This allows driving motorcycles of any size and power. A driver's license is always required to drive a Tesla, and the vehicle may not have more than 9 seats, allowing the driver to transport up to 8 passengers in addition to themselves.
