Germany: 15-Year-Olds Can Now Drive Moped Cars
Teenagers as young as 15 can now drive moped cars, also known as 45 km/h cars, in Germany. These vehicles offer a practical solution for short commutes and independence, especially in rural areas. However, safety and price-performance ratio may be concerns.
Moped cars can be driven with an AM license, without the need for TÜV inspection, registration, or car tax. They provide a closed interior with heating and windshield wipers, offering protection in bad weather and space for luggage. However, they lack some crash safety features found in regular cars.
Driving a moped car requires practice due to its different driving feel compared to a scooter. A driving course is recommended. In Switzerland and Austria, similar vehicles require a category M license from age 14 or 15.
The Ellenator, a converted Fiat 500, offers full car comfort and safety features, reaching a top speed of about 90 km/h, and can be driven from age 16 with an A1 license.
Prices for moped cars range from around 8,000 euros for affordable models to over 20,000 euros for high-end ones. Electric models like the Opel Rock start at around 7,990 euros.
Moped cars provide mobility to young people in rural areas or apprentices without public transport. They offer protection from bad weather and space for luggage. However, safety features and price-performance ratio should be considered. Driving practice is essential due to their unique driving feel.
