General Generation Z's Work Companion Shift: Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) frequently becomes the focus of discussions regarding its impact on corporate jobs, often neglecting the benefits it could bring to the majority of the U.S. workforce: hourly employees. The reality is that AI has the potential to aid this often-overlooked group, such as those in hospitality, food service, and healthcare.
As technological advancements continue to evolve, they can both create and disrupt jobs. According to McKinsey & Company, "by 2030, activities that account for up to 30 percent of hours currently worked across the US economy could be automated." While some might believe AI will lead to widespread unemployment and the implementation of universal income, allowing us to enjoy endless vacations and pursue our hobbies, this is an oversimplification. Instead, AI will primarily impact knowledge work, with hourly employees being an area where individuals can thrive.
Regrettably, the hourly workforce is commonly overlooked when discussing how technology will reshape the future. As we stand at the brink of a technological revolution, it's essential to acknowledge AI's potential to transform the lives of these workers, especially with Generation Z, the digital-native generation, increasingly entering the workforce.
Elevating the Hourly Work Experience
The introduction of AI into the hourly workforce is more than just an upgrade—it's a complete transformation of the way tasks are performed. Complex and time-consuming processes, such as scheduling and onboarding, become simpler and more efficient with AI.
Fulfilling the Gen-Z's Expectations
As more Gen-Zers join the workforce, their preference for technology-driven solutions becomes increasingly apparent. They value efficiency, transparency, and ease of use, all of which AI can provide. In fact, according to a survey, 47% of Gen-Z employees say they receive better guidance from AI than their managers.
AI's role in streamlining hiring processes is particularly significant. Automated systems can quickly match candidates to roles, reducing the time spent on manual screening and improving recruitment's overall efficiency. For Gen-Z workers, who are accustomed to instant responses and digital interactions, these improvements are not just appreciated—they are expected.
Enhancing Job Satisfaction and Retention
AI's influence extends beyond operational efficiency; it plays a crucial role in boosting job satisfaction and retention among hourly workers. Consistent scheduling and clear communication have long been a challenge for this group, especially as one in five Gen-Z workers juggles multiple jobs (poly-employment). AI will directly address these issues through predictive scheduling and real-time updates, providing workers with reliable expectations. When employees are consistently on time, clients receive the quality service they deserve.
The World Economic Forum predicts that 23% of global jobs will change in the next five years due to industry shifts, including AI. Through AI, employees can receive support with ongoing training and development tailored to their individual needs and career goals. This accessible, on-demand learning empowers workers to upskill and grow within their roles, fostering a sense of progress and fulfillment. These resources are particularly important for Gen-Z, who prioritize personal growth and are more likely to stay with employers who invest in their development.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, it's clear that AI is not only a tool for corporate jobs but also a valuable ally for the hourly workforce. By embracing AI, businesses can address diverse employee needs, increase productivity, and create work environments that are technologically advanced and genuinely supportive. However, to fully realize AI's potential, industry-wide standards around data transparency and ethical practices are essential.
While AI excels at data analysis, it cannot replicate the empathy essential in management. Factors such as bias and incorrect results can arise if the AI solution is trained on low-quality data. Successful implementation requires not only thorough training of the data model but also thoughtful change management to build trust among employees without undermining human judgment. Lastly, it's imperative for leaders to remember that the efficiencies gained by AI should be balanced with empathy. Each of us must consider the human impact in the design and application of AI solutions to ensure they truly empower individuals.
With AI as a partner, we can build a future where work is not just about earning a paycheck but about achieving growth, satisfaction, and a better quality of life for all.
