Mercedes-Benz Unveils Third-Generation GLA: A Premium Compact SUV with Electric and Hybrid Options

Future 2026 Mercedes GLA to compete against VW Golf and ID 3, available in gasoline and electric versions

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch a new third-generation GLA, set to hit the market in 2025. The SUV, which will compete in the compact car segment, promises to deliver a premium, SUV-oriented experience with expanded comfort, technology, and safety features.

The new GLA will be available in both electric and hybrid versions, with the electric variant set to replace the first-generation EQA EV in the second half of 2026, while the hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) versions will follow suit in early 2027.

The electric GLA will feature a front trunk (frunk), a first for the EQA, and is expected to grow in size, providing a more spacious interior compared to the current GLA and EQA. The SUV's cabin will boast a free-standing full width display, AI-supported infotainment functions, and more upmarket materials than the current model, aiming to outclass rivals in the segment. The interior design will mirror the designs of the recently revealed CLA saloon and incoming GLB crossover.

The new GLA will also sport a distinctive, more coupe-like silhouette, with a sportier front end that includes Mercedes' new 'Iconic Grille'. The electric variant will be powered by either a single-motor or dual-motor powertrain, delivering 268bhp and 349bhp respectively. The electric GLA's top-end range, based on the new CLA, is expected to be 484 miles.

At least two AMG performance models of the GLA are planned to be released in 2027, featuring axial flux motors from British firm Yasa. The specific battery and powertrain options for the hybrid and ICE versions of the new GLA have not been detailed as of yet.

In comparison with the Volkswagen Golf and ID.3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA third generation emphasizes a more premium, SUV-oriented experience with expanded comfort, technology, and safety features, compared to the more compact and traditionally hatchback Volkswagen Golf, and the dedicated electric range efficiency of the Volkswagen ID.3.

The new GLA will share the same 800V electrical architecture as the new CLA, but specific dimensions (length, width, height) or performance specs (horsepower, torque, electric range) of the electric or hybrid GLA variants are currently unavailable. The combustion 2025 GLA 250 models sport 18- or 19-inch wheels, premium finishes, and advanced driver safety technology.

Stay tuned for more updates on the third-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA as more details become available.

The third-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA, due in 2025, will not only offer traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) versions but also electric and hybrid options, epitomizing the fusion of lifestyle and technology in the automotive world. In 2026, the electric variant of the GLA will replace the first-generation EQA EV, showcasing the prominence of electric-vehicles in the brand's lineup.
