French-engineered Mixed Reality Device: Lynx R-1
High-Tech Début: Stan Laroque Unveils France's First Standalone Mixed Reality Headset
In a groundbreaking move, French technology pioneer Stan Laroque and his team at Lynx have launched a crowdfunding campaign for their latest project: a standalone mixed reality (MR) headset that integrates both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology. The innovative device, named Lynx R-1, has already surpassed initial expectations, promising a futuristic approach to immersive technology.
"At Lynx, we aim to revolutionize the way we interact with virtuality," said Laroque. Touting the versatility of the Lynx R-1, he asserted, "This headset will be the first to master all four categories of immersive technology." The device conveniently allows users to switch between VR and AR experiences seamlessly, even within the same application, for a uniquely immersive experience.
14 passionate professionals in the fields of design, electronics engineering, Unity development, and low-system architecture collaborated to design this pioneering MR headset. Initially, Lynx targeted the business world and professionals with the device, considering the numerous industrial applications for its mixed reality capabilities. However, a surge of interest from developers interested in creating consumer-friendly MR experiences prompted the team to broaden their focus.
Several regular consumers also expressed interest in acquiring a standalone headset that would set itself apart from existing devices. In response, Lynx decided to create a crowdfunding campaign to facilitate mass production. The company has made a commitment to transparency in their software platform, shunning subscription fees and mandatory account creation while emphasizing strong data privacy policies.
The Lynx R-1 is compatible with Unity3D, SteamVR, and soon Unreal Engine. The high-performance Qualcomm XR2 processor provides 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with an additional SD card slot for up to 1TB of external storage. Like the Oculus Quest, it boasts hand-tracking and 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF). The resolution stands at 1600x1600 pixels per eye, with a 90Hz frame rate and a 90° field of view. With these powerful features, the Lynx R-1 competes with premium headsets such as the Oculus Quest. The device is priced at €530, while a limited edition with a transparent front face retails for €745. Professionals can purchase the headset for €950 and receive support to resell it.
The Lynx R-1's innovative blend of VR and AR capabilities positions it as an appealing choice for industries that can benefit from its mixed reality capabilities in fieldwork. Though specifications like display resolution and field of view remain unspecified, its strong enterprise focus sets the Lynx R-1 apart from consumer-oriented devices like the Oculus Quest series. With the first deliveries due in April 2022, it remains to be seen whether the Lynx R-1 will replicate Oculus' success following its own Kickstarter beginnings.
"With the Lynx R-1's compatibility with popular smartphone software and its seamless integration between VR and AR experiences, it's likely that this mixed reality headset will attract users who are already fond of smartphones and gadgets."
"Stan Laroque and his team at Lynx have expanded the realm of technology by revealing France's first standalone mixed reality headset, showcasing the company's commitment to developing cutting-edge smartphones and gadgets."
