"U.S.A. is overregulated, the tax and burden of regulation are too steeper," summarizes the U.S. Commercial Service the companies' sentiments. "But, on the other hand, the U.S.A. offers a tremendous market with a vast potential." From the perspective of those surveyed, the qualified workforce, innovativeness, and robust legal frameworks are also positive aspects.

In the end, around 60 percent of those surveyed find that the U.S.A.'s infrastructure, scientific institutions, and production conditions are commendable.

The survey reveals common notions of the U.S.A., highlighting its strengths and virtues. When thinking of the U.S.A., economic ambition and opportunities are at the forefront, followed by innovation, skilled workforce, and entrepreneurial spirit. Many foreign managers also think of the English language, pragmatism, diversity, and technological industry.

For the analysis, executives responsible for expansion decisions were surveyed. "There hasn't been such a broad and comprehensive study on the location U.S.A. before," said Mary Johnson, director of the U.S. Commercial Service.

English Language as a Challenger

The location U.S.A. is often slammed by financial associations. According to a survey by the Brookings Institution, U.S. economic experts see the location only in the global midfield. Almost 80 percent believe that the U.S.A. has become less attractive in the past ten years.

In the U.S. Commercial Service survey, the picture is mixed: The economic potential and innovative strength are mentioned most frequently as strengths (14 percent), followed by skilled workers (10) and supply chains (10), opportunities for development (8), and favorable geographical location (7).

The respondents mentioned high operating and labor costs (14), language and cultural differences (9), overregulation (8), and high tax burden (7) as weaknesses.
