Fibre optic growth initiated by Telekom within the city center of Offenburg

In the picturesque city of Offenburg, a significant transformation is underway. Deutsche Telekom, in collaboration with the city, is expanding its fiber optic network, aiming to provide faster, more stable, and climate-friendly internet connections to over 4,900 households and businesses.

The expansion, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, will see the laying of over 103 kilometers of fiber optic cable directly to homes, and the installation of 23 new network distributors. This modernization will enable significantly higher speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second, a stark improvement over traditional copper connections.

Tenants looking to connect will need to book a fiber optic tariff, with Telekom handling the coordination with the property owner. Homeowners of single or two-family houses get a free house connection when booking a tariff, while multi-family houses with three or more units usually get the house connection for free with the owner's consent, but a tariff booking is required for internet usage.

The choice of construction company for this ambitious project fell to DATABAU Holding SE from Teningen. To optimize construction time, Baum Hoch-, Tief- und Straßenbau GmbH from Renchen will join the team from September. In the city center, DATABAU Holding SE has hired the company Züblin for the construction work.

The expansion is not just about speed. Fiber optic connections are less prone to interference and more robust against external influences, ensuring a stable connection for digital learning, working, streaming, and gaming. They are also better for the climate and increase the value of a property.

The expansion planning takes into account local events like the fish market and Christmas market to ensure minimal disruption to the city's vibrant community life. In fact, the expansion is already complete in the district of Stegermatt, with 940 households able to use Telekom's high-speed network.

Businesses can also benefit from this modernization, reacting flexibly to the constantly growing digital demands. With a fiber optic connection, multiple people can simultaneously learn, work, surf, stream, and play digitally without Wi-Fi instability.

This fiber optic expansion in Offenburg is a step towards a more connected, faster, and greener future. As more households and businesses connect, the city will see a digital boom, enhancing its quality of life and economic growth.
