FCC Launches US Cyber Trust Mark for IoT Devices to Boost Consumer Confidence
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched a new initiative to boost consumer confidence in Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Unanimously, the FCC has voted to create a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for consumer-focused IoT products. This program will introduce the 'US Cyber Trust Mark' and a QR code for detailed cybersecurity information.
The 'US Cyber Trust Mark' will be eligible for a wide range of IoT products, including home security cameras, voice-activated shopping devices, internet-connected appliances, fitness trackers, garage door openers, and baby monitors. The program aims to empower consumers to make informed decisions by differentiating trustworthy products and encouraging higher cybersecurity standards.
The initiative comes in response to the alarming increase in IoT device attacks. In the first half of 2021 alone, there were over 1.5 billion attacks against IoT devices. The FCC hopes that this labeling program will help restore consumer confidence and trust in IoT technology.
The program relies on a collaborative approach between the public and private sectors. While the FCC provides oversight, approved third-party administrators will manage the evaluations and authorizations for the 'US Cyber Trust Mark'. As of now, no information is available about which companies have voluntarily registered for this program.
The FCC's new cybersecurity labeling program for IoT devices is a significant step towards enhancing consumer trust and confidence. By providing clear, accessible information about a product's cybersecurity measures, the 'US Cyber Trust Mark' and QR code system will help consumers make informed decisions. The success of this program depends on the voluntary participation of IoT manufacturers and the willingness of consumers to engage with the new labeling system.
