Expansion of Rheinmetall's influence in Romania's weapons industry
Rheinmetall Expands Presence in Romania, Boosting Defense and Economy
German defence and mobility company Rheinmetall is significantly expanding its presence in Romania, establishing a comprehensive local production network that includes partnerships with key Romanian companies.
This expansion includes the acquisition of a majority stake in Automecanica Medias, a manufacturer of special vehicles, equipment for trucks, and trailers for both civil and military markets. Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL, the Romanian subsidiary of Rheinmetall, will maintain the chassis of air defense systems for the Romanian armed forces and focus on local production of the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.
Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL is headquartered in Medias, Romania, with a service center in Satu Mare. The company's localization efforts involve cooperation with Romanian firms such as Uzina Automecanica Moreni, Interactive Software SRL, and MarcTel-SIT. These collaborations enhance local procurement, assembly processes, and integration of Romanian expertise into the production chain, thereby strengthening the domestic defense industry and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
In addition to Automecanica Medias, Rheinmetall has established a state-of-the-art Excellence Centre in Romania. Equipped with advanced simulators and comprehensive training programs, this center focuses on transferring critical know-how to the local workforce, offering practical experience and technical expertise in operating, maintaining, and developing advanced defense technologies, especially relating to the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.
Rheinmetall's localization efforts also extend to the production of propellants. The company provides expertise and technology for the production of propellants in the Victoria Explosive Powder Factory. Rheinmetall Munitions Romania will produce medium-caliber ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles and air defense systems.
This strategic investment not only supports Romania’s defense capabilities and industrial independence but also generates hundreds of jobs in manufacturing, engineering, and technical services, contributing significantly to the Romanian economy. Rheinmetall's expansion aligns with broader European goals of defense sovereignty, showcasing a localized manufacturing model that fosters sustainable defense sector growth within Romania.
Cooperation with Romanian companies, including Automecanica Medias, will boost local supply chains and promote industrial growth. This expansion marks a significant step forward for Rheinmetall in its role as a leading manufacturer and service provider for the Romanian armed forces.
- Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL, in its focus on local production, will also produce military sports equipment for training purposes, reinforcing the Romanian defense industry's self-reliance.
