Expanding His Dispute with OpenAI, Elon Musk Now Targets Microsoft
In a twist to a long and unusual legal journey, Elon Musk has expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI and its founder Sam Altman. The amended lawsuit, a 107-page document detailing Musk's perspective on the situation, now includes LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.
The lawsuit alleges that Altman intentionally deceived Musk, exploiting his concerns about the dangers of AI. Musk claims he was deceived by Altman's pitch of a world filled with safe AI, only to discover that OpenAI had teamed with Microsoft to make a profit.
OpenAI, originally started as a non-profit, is now fast becoming a for-profit subsidiary of Microsoft, according to the lawsuit. This transition, Musk argues, goes against the initial mission of the company, which aimed to take donations, scale up, and develop artificial general intelligence safely and for the benefit of humanity.
The lawsuit includes 26 separate accusations, including two criminal violations of the RICO Act. It states that OpenAI, Inc. was co-founded by Musk as an independent charity committed to safety and transparency. However, the company's version of events is that Musk tried to take over the company and forcibly merge it with Tesla.
Musk is upset about OpenAI's decision to start making money. The addition of products like ChatGPT to their offerings has raised concerns about the company's commitment to its original mission. The non-profit board remains in charge, but the situation is complicated.
The lawsuit details a potential Terminator-style future created by AI, including replacing the human workforce, spreading disinformation, and manipulating political and military systems. It alleges that OpenAI has been unjustly enriched to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.
When he didn't get his way, Musk left the company. OpenAI published emails Musk sent to the company when he was still a part of it, shedding light on his growing discontent. The lawsuit also includes Reid Hoffman, one of the individuals named in the amended document.
The lawsuit is just one chapter in a long and complex story. As it unfolds, the future of OpenAI and its commitment to safety and transparency remains uncertain.
