Europe's Airspace Under Drone Siege: Major Airports, Military Bases Targeted
Drones have caused significant disruptions across European airspace in recent weeks, with major airports and military installations targeted. The incidents have raised alarm among authorities and the public, leading to discussions about enhanced security measures.
On September 22, drones flew over Copenhagen Airport, causing substantial delays and cancellations in Scandinavia's largest air hub. This incident followed similar occurrences at Munich Airport in Germany, which was closed twice in less than 24 hours due to drone sightings on September 23, affecting at least 6500 passengers. The disruptions have prompted European defence ministers to agree on developing a 'drone wall' along their borders to protect critical infrastructure.
Intrusions into NATO's airspace have reached unprecedented levels, with some incidents blamed on Russia. On September 10, a swarm of Russian drones entered Poland's airspace, forcing NATO aircraft to intercept and shoot down some of the devices. Days later, NATO jets escorted three Russian warplanes out of Estonia's airspace. Mysterious drone flights over European Union member countries have also raised concerns about potential espionage. In Germany, authorities are investigating claims that unidentified drones may have spied on critical infrastructure in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. Multiple drones were spotted over a power plant, a university hospital, and a shipyard in Kiel on September 25. Several government units are involved in the investigation, including the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Interior, the federal government, the Bundeswehr, regional law enforcement agencies, and international partners such as Denmark.
In Denmark, drones flew over four smaller airports, including two military bases, between September 24 and September 25. Authorities suspect a 'professional' actor behind the 'systematic flights'.
The recent spate of drone incidents across Europe has highlighted the need for enhanced security measures to protect critical infrastructure and airspace. Authorities are working together to investigate these incidents and develop strategies to prevent and mitigate future disruptions.
