EU Summit Aims to Bolster Defense Against Russian Aggression by 2030
NATO has recently intercepted and shot down Russian drones that breached Poland's and Estonia's airspace. In response, the EU summit in Copenhagen aims to bolster Europe's defenses against Russian aggression by 2030, as the US shifts focus. The European Political Community (EPC) will discuss security, trafficking, and migration. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have emphasized the need for enhanced border security and technological innovation in defense.
Following a series of drone incidents at Danish airports and military bases, Denmark received military support from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine. This led to the closure of Copenhagen airport and increased security measures. Greece has established the Hellenic Center for Defense Innovation (ELKAK) to strengthen its technological capabilities in defense. Mitsotakis urged Europe to lead in technological innovation and production.
Besides Denmark, Spain and Italy have also sent ships, aircraft, and air defense systems to support the NATO mission and EU summit security. Ukraine's military and financial support, as well as its potential EU membership, will be discussed at the summit.
