The annual dissertation and master's thesis awards by Sparkasse am Niederrhein have been a tradition at the University of Duisburg's Faculty of Engineering Sciences for 28 years. These awards recognise outstanding theses with a focus on practical, industry-relevant topics.

This year, the awards were presented to Dr. Max Frei and Jannik Korte. Dr. Frei's dissertation developed an AI-assisted method for automatically analysing particle images, while Korte's master's thesis improved the power management of UVC-LEDs used for disinfection.

Professor Alexander Malkwitz, head of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, congratulated both researchers. Dr. Rüdiger Buß, also a member of the faculty, joined in the congratulations.

The awards given by Sparkasse am Niederrhein are valued in science and industry. The prices for the dissertations by Dr. Frei and Korte were 2,500 Euros and 1,500 Euros respectively.

Sparkasse am Niederrhein sees itself as the scientific showcase of the University of Duisburg for the left Niederrhein. The largest credit institution in the Kreis Wesel, Sparkasse am Niederrhein is in cooperation with the Moers-based association for the promotion of engineering sciences.

The awards given by Sparkasse am Niederrhein are annual events. For more detailed information about eligibility criteria, prize amount, submission deadlines, and past recipients, consulting the university’s official faculty webpage or Sparkasse am Niederrhein's announcements would be necessary.

In summary, the awards by Sparkasse am Niederrhein aim to foster collaboration between academic research and business practice by recognising and rewarding application-oriented research theses from engineering and related faculties at the University of Duisburg. These awards typically include monetary prizes and official recognition at university or bank events.

Other areas where these awards could foster collaboration could be the integration of scientific findings with medical-conditions research, utilizing AI for its potential in healthtech, and adapting technology for power management of devices used in medical disinfection, such as artificial-intelligence algorithms to improve imaging diagnostics and UVC-LED management for effective treatment. The annual awards by Sparkasse am Niederrhein, renowned in both science and industry, offer a platform for further exploration and implementation of these concepts.
