Emscher-Lippe Region Unites to Tackle Climate Change with Rainwater Initiative

The Emscher-Lippe region is launching a joint initiative, Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk, to combat climate change. Led by Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband, along with local cities, the project aims to fortify the natural water cycle, cool the air, and lessen heavy rain risks.

At the core of the initiative is the significance of rainwater. Measures concentrate on storing, collecting, or infiltrating rainwater locally to alleviate climate change impacts such as heavy rain, drought, or heatwaves. Hamm has joined the project, pledging to integrate climate adaptation objectives into its municipal land-use planning and setting a positive example on its own properties.

Holzwickede, another participant, is involved in the Ruhrkonferenz project 'Climate-Resilient Region with International Radiance'. Dr. Frank Obenaus, Technical Director of Lippeverband and Emschergenossenschaft, is spearheading efforts to adapt water management and urban infrastructures to climate change.

With Hamm's inclusion, the Climate Initiative Klima.Werk continues to expand, promoting the transformation of public and private infrastructures to adapt to climate change. This collaborative endeavor involving municipalities, water management associations, and cities aims to create climate-resilient cities through innovative water management strategies.
