Emerging Technology Development at BioSpring: Innovations Taking Shape in Offenbach

Offenbach, Germany, is set to become a significant player in the global biotechnology industry, following the groundbreaking ceremony for BioSpring's new production facility on July 3, 2025. The event was attended by Hessian Minister President Boris Rhein, signifying the importance of the project.

Located on a 35-hectare site that has been industrially used for decades by companies like Hoechst, Alessa, and Clariant, the new facility will be a part of the Innovation Campus, a future-oriented hub for cutting-edge technologies and job creation. The city of Offenbach acquired the site in 2019 and has since transformed it into a thriving ecosystem for innovation.

BioSpring, a biotechnology company specializing in the production of oligonucleotides, synthetically produced RNA sequences with potential for medicine, particularly for new therapy forms against cancer, Alzheimer's, and rare genetic diseases, will establish its new production facility on the Innovation Campus. The facility, one of the world's largest for the production of therapeutic nucleic acids, will cover over 15,200 square meters, making it one of the world’s largest manufacturing sites for DNA- and RNA-based active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

The scale of the new facility will enable BioSpring to offer high-volume production capacity to meet growing demand in therapeutic nucleic acids, critical in areas such as oncology, neurodegeneration, and rare genetic disorders. This strategic expansion is not only expected to boost the company’s manufacturing capacity and global competitiveness in nucleic acid therapeutics but also deliver significant economic and innovation benefits to the Rhine-Main region’s biotechnology industry.

The facility is projected to create approximately 200 jobs initially, with plans for further employment growth. This substantial job creation will boost the local economy and strengthen the biotech employment landscape of the Rhine-Main area, a key economic and innovation hub in Germany. Offenbach's Mayor, Dr. Felix Schwenke, stated that the growth of BioSpring will take place on the Innovation Campus, making Offenbach a significant player in the global biotechnology industry for the first time.

Sustainability is a key aspect of the Innovation Campus development, with plans for over 200 new trees, green streets and roofs, a rainwater system, low-CO2 district heating connection, photovoltaic systems, and energy storage systems. The infrastructure development for the Innovation Campus is simultaneous with company construction, with transition solutions for ongoing operations until completion in 2027.

In summary, the new BioSpring facility represents a strategic expansion that not only boosts the company’s manufacturing capacity and global competitiveness in nucleic acid therapeutics but also delivers significant economic and innovation benefits to the Rhine-Main region’s biotechnology industry.
