First Light Fusion's strategy differs from traditional methods, replacing lasers with a high-velocity projectile to ignite fusion fuel. This approach is simpler, faster, and potentially cheaper, using off-the-shelf technology like gas guns and electromagnetic launchers.

The company's progress has been impressive. In 2025, First Light Fusion achieved a significant milestone towards commercializing their inertial fusion approach, announcing the successful generation of first X-rays on their Machine 3 (M3). The M3 is designed to align with future fusion power plant requirements, marking a key step towards practical fusion energy.

First Light Fusion is well-funded, with close to £60 million secured in early 2025 to fund the design of a pilot power plant. The company has also appointed a Head of Power Plant, signalling a clear focus on moving towards commercial fusion energy by 2030.

Meanwhile, in the US, a groundbreaking development in fusion technology is expected to be unveiled by early 2023, with the first prototype fusion reactor receiving a $50 million investment from the US government.

Elsewhere, the world of aviation is also seeing significant advancements. Lilium, a German company, plans to construct the first eVTOL aircraft to be built in production next year. Vertical Aerospace is driving the development of its ground-breaking aircraft in the expanding eVTOL sector.

In 2021, public flight testing of VoloCity by German aerospace pioneer Volocopter is expected, marking a significant advancement. Test flights of eVTOL planes are expected in 2023, showcasing amazing developments in aviation technology.

The VX4, a revolutionary eVTOL plane, took off for its first flight this year and hovered for 10 minutes. The ambitious project aims to provide numerous opportunities for renewable energy and revolutionize how humans power the world.
