Elon Musk's cosmodrome transformation: Urbanizing the Spaceport
In the Lone Star State, buzz is building for a new community called Starbase. This transformation is happening right at SpaceX's Texas base, according to reports from Liter.kz and The Washington Post.
Per documents, out of 247 residential plots on Boca Chica Village's southernmost tip, a staggering 90% of the land belongs to SpaceX or its employees. Spanning 3.8 sq. km, the city is already home to over 200 residents.
Back in 2014, SpaceX made its move to Texas and has since constructed a colossal complex. The company dubs this base - Starbase - as one of the pioneering private spaceports worldwide, designed for orbital flights.
Initially, local residents and officials warmly welcomed SpaceX, hoping the company would breath new life into their struggling economy. Unfortunately, soon enough, environmental concerns surfaced. Christopher Basaldella, co-founder of an environmental justice network in South Texas, expresses worry that granting Starbase city status could exacerbate these environmental issues.
Environmental concerns primarily revolve around wastewater management and the impact on local wetlands. Back in 2022, SpaceX initiated operations at Boca Chica and conducted an initial environmental impact statement for a limited number of launches. However, the proposed increase in launches from 5 to 25 per year has reignited the environmental discussion.
Key issues include industrial wastewater discharge without the necessary permit and releases affecting sensitive wetland areas. Oxygen releases near the facility have even led to fines, indicating potential damage to local ecosystems. Public concern and regulatory review have been ongoing, with delays due to these regulatory violations.
