Modos e-Paper Kits: A Game-Changer for Productivity

Modos Tech is set to revolutionise the world of displays with its new e-paper kits, offering a unique alternative to mainstream displays. These kits are designed with productivity in mind, addressing issues such as distraction, eye strain, and fatigue.

The e-paper kits are intended for a wide range of users, including writers, engineers, accessibility advocates, and digital minimalists. They are built around an open-hardware design that includes an Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA, a DDR3 framebuffer, and an STM32H750 microcontroller.

One of the standout features of the Modos e-paper kits is their high refresh rate. The Modos Paper Dev Kit achieves refresh rates up to 75 Hz and sub-100 ms latency, making them significantly faster and more responsive than typical commercial e-paper displays.

The kits also offer a paper-like experience, reducing eye strain, fatigue, and distractions. They are naturally readable in bright light and sunlight, making them well-suited for outdoor or brightly lit environments where traditional screens struggle.

The Modos e-paper kits are compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux systems, and support HDMI and USB Type-C connections. This flexibility allows integration as a secondary display or in custom projects easily.

It's important to note that the Modos e-paper kits are not designed to replace business tablets or traditional business laptops. They are intended as productivity tools for focused, distraction-free work.

The Modos e-paper kits are still in pre-order status, with expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2025. They are being crowdfunded through Crowd Supply, a platform with a decent track record for delivery.

For users with specific visual or cognitive requirements, the Modos e-paper kits offer an alternative that minimizes eye fatigue and digital noise. The open-hardware design of Modos Tech's e-paper displays eliminates proprietary bottlenecks typical in commercial e-paper displays.

The Modos e-paper kits are available in two sizes: a 6-inch model selling for $199 and a 13.3-inch model selling for $599. They can be pre-ordered via Toms Hardware.

While the current implementation of Modos Tech's e-paper displays does not support color displays, the company is crowdfunding a new set of developer kits featuring e-paper displays capable of reaching 75Hz refresh rates.
