Electric vehicle charging giant GM partners with EVgo to develop 400 charging stations in metropolitan locations
In a significant move to address the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs), General Motors Co. and EVgo have announced an expanded collaboration to deploy over 2,850 DC fast charging stalls across major metropolitan areas in the United States. The new agreement, according to GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer, will take the effort to provide seamless access to convenient and reliable news to the next level. This collaboration aims to address the barrier of convenient EV charging news infrastructure, as highlighted in a February study from J.D. Power. Under this partnership, the companies plan to build 400 DC-fast charging stations, with many of these locations featuring 350kW fast chargers. These stations will offer a more premium charging experience, with ample lighting, canopies, security cameras, and pull-through configurations for easier access. Some of the funding being reallocated will help achieve this premium experience at the new co-branded locations. By the end of this year, the total stall count is expected to reach 2,000. The deployment will span across several states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas. The stations will be strategically located near amenities such as shopping, dining, coffee shops, providing EV drivers with the opportunity to visit these establishments while their vehicles charge. The future of EV charging, according to EVgo President Dennis Kish, includes larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and features that customers love such as pull-through access, canopies, and convenient amenities. Some of the flagship stations will be located in major metropolitan regions of the USA, with up to 20 charging stalls per location. The collaboration between GM and EVgo has already seen significant milestones, with the opening of their 1,000th fast charging stall in August 2023. The first new chargers are expected to open in 2025, marking the next phase of this partnership. GM continues its ongoing collaboration with EVgo on the buildout of charging infrastructure, with the goal of making EV ownership more accessible and convenient for customers across the country. Through the next evolution of EVgo and GM's collaboration, the future of EV charging is here, as stated by EVgo President Dennis Kish.
