In the city of Bochum, there has been a significant increase in traffic accidents involving e-scooters this year, with a total of 60 recorded incidents, a marked rise compared to previous years. This surge in accidents has prompted an urgent appeal for e-scooter users to exercise greater responsibility on the roads.

To ensure the safe use of e-scooters, several key guidelines are widely recommended and often legally required.

First and foremost, always wear a helmet on every ride. Helmet use significantly reduces the risk and severity of head trauma, acting as a shock absorber for the head in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, no helmet requirement exists for e-scooters, but their use is strongly advised.

E-scooters are only approved for one person. Riding with two people results in a warning fine, and one person will have to walk. This practice not only is illegal but also increases the likelihood of accidents.

It is crucial to stay off sidewalks and instead use bike lanes or roadways where permitted. Riding on sidewalks is commonly banned to protect pedestrians. In Bochum, the prohibited use of roadways or sidewalks was a cause for 21 e-scooter accidents.

Follow posted speed limits, often 15 mph or lower. Slower speeds improve reaction time and reduce injury risk. Some cities enforce speed governors on scooters to comply with these limits.

DUI laws apply to e-scooter riders just as they do to drivers of cars or bicycles. Riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and unsafe. In the Bochum area, driving under the influence was a factor in 11 e-scooter accidents.

Additional safety practices include using lights when riding at night, wearing reflective clothing, avoiding the use of phones or headphones while riding, signaling to others on the road, and practicing defensive riding to avoid hazards.

Errors when entering flowing traffic, such as at pedestrian crossings, led to 11 e-scooter accidents. Right-of-way violations also contributed to 7 accidents.

The consequences of these accidents often result in injured persons due to the lack of protection on e-scooters. For further information, please visit polizei.nrw/e-scooter.
