"Constructing our initial 100 courses took roughly 12 years, and now, within a matter of a year, we can generate and launch nearly 150 new courses," said von Ahn. "This feat underscores the capabilities of generative AI, providing direct benefits to our learners." He further added, "This launch demonstrates the transformative impact of our AI and automation investments, which have allowed us to scale at an unprecedented pace and quality."

Jessie Becker, Duolingo's Senior Director of Learning Design, stated, "Previously, a small team spent years constructing a single new course from scratch. Now, by employing generative AI for content creation and validation, we can concentrate our expertise in areas of optimal impact, ensuring each course exceeds Duolingo's stringent quality standards."

In his email, von Ahn stated that this shift would gradually phase out contractors tasked with jobs that AI can handle.

"AI isn't merely a productivity enhancer," he penned. "It helps us get closer to our mission. To educate well, we need to create prodigious amounts of content, and doing that manually isn't scalable. One of the wisest decisions we made recently was ditching our sluggish, manual content production process for one driven by AI. Without AI, it would take us eons to scale our content to cover more learners. We owe it to our learners to provide them with this content as expeditiously as possible."
