You know what's hot in several Thuringian municipalities? Comprehensive coverage of rockin' WiFi! Jena, for instance, boasts a grand 170 Wi-Fi hotspots for the awesome price of nothin'. Tina Schnabel, city utilities spokeswoman, declares responsibility for furnishing a modern digital infrastructure for both citizens and guests. Around 6k folks utilize this WiFi service monthly, with the city app "Mein Jena", hailed as a prerequisite for Wi-Fi use. If you ain't feelin' the app, worry not! There's a 48-hour valid short-term registration at your service. Safety comes first, after all, with the system warding off access to unsavory content.

Jena's not the only city enthusiastic about this digital connectivity. Mühlhausen values it so much, they're aiming to boost the offer in parts of the city center, with 20 hotspots already in place. EU funds have also funded a system at the Schwanenteich conference and cultural center. The city aims to augment shopping center charm as a destination, given the high tourist anticipation for this offer. Currently, the outdoor hotspots are only accessible from 8 AM to 10 PM. Future plans involve Wi-Fi expansion in the town hall complex.

Erfurt has Wi-Fi on tap, too—in its trams! Patrick Weisheit shares that all 93 trams and 74 buses in the public transport company sport Wi-Fi. In 2024 alone, this offer was used an impressive five million times. With 50 MB of data per day at your disposal, there's plenty of time to binge-watch the latest shows! The city of Weimar doesn't offer an overview of Wi-Fi points in the city area but does provide hotspots in the town hall, administration building, and tourist information office.

The city of Gera has no public Wi-Fi hotspots on its own but relies on the association BürgerNetz Gera-Greiz for supply. Since 2015, they've been running the project "Freifunkkommune Gera", supported by state funds. The city contributes to its creation and upkeep. Suhl, meanwhile, boasts five hotspots operated by a third-party provider, with an average of 5k sessions each month.

But what about the state authorities? Thousands have already benefited from state-administered Wi-Fi, with just over 310k individuals using the service in the first half of 2025. That's a whopping 172 terabytes of data!

The Commission has not adopted a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation in the context of digital infrastructure or gadgets.

In Mühlhausen, the expansion of hotspots is aimed not at promoting the use of gadgets or technology, but at boosting the charm of the city center as a tourist destination, with 20 hotspots already in place.
