Mobius Digital's forthcoming project subtly revealed in patch notes for the last Outer Wilds update.

Developers from Outer Wilds studio officially announce they are crafting a new project, yet insist revelations about the game will not be disclosed for several years.

Outer Wilds Devs' Mysterious Announcement:

It's about time Mobius Digital, the legendary creators of the sci-fi camping game sensation, Outer Wilds, are cooking something new. And they didn't even shout it from the rooftops! You read that right; it wasn't a flashy press release or a social media announcement - instead, we found it in the patch notes for the latest Outer Wilds Update 16. Yep, you heard it straight from the horse's mouth.

It's weird, though. Usually, when developers switch gears to a new project after a massive hit, there's all sorts of buzz brewing. But in this case, it was just a casual comment in the changelog.

"This is a minor patch mainly for adding a couple folks to the credits and fixing two PC-only bugs: clicking out of the game disabling certain inputs (affecting streamers in particular), and diagonal movement being faster than normal with mouse and keyboard," they wrote, explaining that the patch would first hit Steam and follow for other platforms later in May.

As for why the release order differs, here's the lowdown: "We wanna minimize any chance that bad bugs on Steam sneak through testing and mess up the release on other platforms. No hard feelings to our QA testers, we're just being extra cautious and saving our resources for our new game!"

And to put a stop to any confusion, the dev team repeated the statement in the closing remarks: "FYI, there are no more major updates planned for Outer Wilds or Echoes of the Eye because we are knee-deep in our next project."

So, Spill the Beans, Mobius!

Now, I can't guarantee this is the very first time a new game from Mobius Digital has seen the light of day, but I reckon it is. Rock, Paper, Shotgun reported it, and there's an air of surprise swirling around social media.

That's also where Mobius Digital warned us not to expect too much too soon.

"It's gonna take a while, like years, before we can dish out any juicy details about the new game," they said on a certain social media platform. "Good things take time."

The full patch notes for the latest Outer Wilds Update 16 can be found below. It's what led us to this tantalizing tidbit in the first place.

I began writing videogame news in 2007 for The Escapist and somehow managed to avoid getting fired until 2014, when I joined the esteemed ranks of PC Gamer.
