Desy's Visitor Centre focuses on simplifying high-end research for public comprehension.
The German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, a leading particle accelerator centre, is set to welcome a new addition to its campus. The construction of DESYUM, a visitor centre inspired by DESY's particle accelerator, has commenced and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The design of DESYUM reflects the innovation and cutting-edge technology that DESY represents. Adhering to the BNB sustainability standard, the centre will be environmentally friendly, aligning with DESY's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
The cornerstone for DESYUM was laid on May 31, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the project. Once completed, DESYUM will accommodate visiting researchers and feature a multimedia exhibition explaining research at DESY. The exhibition is scheduled to open to visitors in April/May 2025.
DESYUM is not just a visitor centre; it serves as a hub for researchers and enthusiasts to exchange ideas. It will foster scientific cooperation, both locally and internationally, and strengthen Hamburg's position as a hub for scientific innovation.
The project for financing DESYUM was initiated by DESY, with the city of Hamburg responsible for 28% of the total cost turnover. This collaboration is part of a broader scientific cooperation between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, further strengthened by the Science City Bahrenfeld, a cooperation for innovation and transfer.
DESY has received the "Hamburg 2040" award, recognising its significant contribution to the city's scientific and technological development. The centre houses various large-scale facilities, including particle accelerators and X-ray lasers, making it a vital player in the global scientific community.
