Delta Air Lines and Wheels Up collaborate on a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiative
In a significant move towards a greener future, the private aviation company Wheels Up has announced a new program aimed at supporting and increasing the demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This initiative comes as part of a strategic partnership with Delta Air Lines, a leading advocate for SAF.
Wheels Up's program is designed to encourage the use of SAF by offering incentives to its members. By booking flights that use SAF, members can earn Delta SkyMiles, making the choice to go green more rewarding. This initiative also allows charter customers to contribute to the purchase of SAF, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.
The collaboration between Wheels Up and Delta extends beyond customer incentives. Wheels Up will obtain SAF from Delta's supply chain, tapping into the latter's commitment to SAF. Delta has been working for several years to bolster the production of SAF, having signed offtake agreements with SAF producers, committing to the purchase of 200 million gallons of SAF.
SAF is a renewable alternative to conventional jet fuel, made from nonpetroleum feedstocks such as food and yard waste, woody biomass, agricultural waste, cooking oils, animal fats, and algae. It is a "drop-in" fuel, meaning it can be blended with traditional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines without requiring modification. The use of SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80%.
Wheels Up's executive vice president of investor relations and sustainability, Jill Greer, stated that the program reinforces Wheels Up's commitment to sustainable aviation. This move aligns with Wheels Up's modernization efforts and sustainability goals, supported by Delta’s commitment to SAF, helping drive broader adoption in the private jet sector.
Delta Air Lines, which owns 95% of Wheels Up, is also planning to use SAF for 10% of its fuel needs by 2030. The company is backing advocacy efforts aimed at making SAF more affordable, further boosting its appeal and adoption.
Wheels Up's partnership with software platform Choose will implement the new SAF program. This partnership will streamline the process of procuring SAF, making it easier for Wheels Up to integrate it into its operations.
By launching this program, Wheels Up is taking a significant step towards promoting sustainable aviation practices within private aviation. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also offers customers the opportunity to take meaningful steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.
