Data centre cooled down, Comfico obtains Ivi in acquisition
In a strategic move, Italian company Cofimco has acquired Turin-based Ilmed Ventilazione Industriale (IVI). This acquisition is part of an international growth strategy promoted by PX3 Partners and strengthens Cofimco's position in data center cooling, naval construction, energy generation, and high-intensity industries.
The global data center cooling systems market, which includes heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, is currently worth around $16.3 to $25.77 billion and could exceed $54 billion by 2033, with a 12.5% annual growth rate. Specifically for liquid cooling within data centers, the market was valued at about $3.9 to $4.2 billion in 2024, with expected growth to approximately $22 billion by 2034 or around $18.6 billion by 2033, expanding at a CAGR of about 16%.
Demand for high-performance cooling systems is growing, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where IVI has a strong presence. IVI, with nearly 40 years of experience, has a production plant in Ningbo, China, making it a valuable asset for Cofimco's growth strategy.
The union of Cofimco and IVI focuses on the naval sector and energy production, with Cofimco aiming to stand out for its engineering capabilities, speed of customization, and reliability in "mission critical" environments. The operation was supported by various service providers, including Aon for benefits and insurance, Chiomenti for legal support, EY for financial, accounting, and tax aspects, ERM for the ESG plan, and Kearney for IT synergies.
The faster growth in liquid cooling is largely driven by the increasing computational power demand from AI and high-density servers, which air cooling struggles to support economically and efficiently. Adoption rates of liquid cooling are increasing, with nearly 19% of data centers currently using liquid cooling and 36% planning to adopt it soon. Immersion cooling—submerging servers in non-conductive liquids—is an emerging niche, providing up to 50% energy savings but still limited in market penetration.
By 2032–2035, data center cooling will be a multi-billion-dollar market exceeding $50 billion, with liquid cooling specifically growing from a few billion to roughly $20 billion, becoming a critical technology to support next-generation computing infrastructure.
