Citroën Leads as First Automaker to Confirm Eligibility for Electric Vehicle Government Subsidy
Citroen's Electric Vehicles Qualify for UK Government's Electric Car Grant
Citroen UK's Managing Director, Greg Taylor, has announced that the support from the UK government makes their range of electric vehicles more accessible, with six models priced under £36,000, including VAT and mandatory extras.
The key requirement for a vehicle to qualify for the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG) is that it must be a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, priced at or below £37,000, including VAT. The car must also have a minimum WLTP range of 100 miles and an 8-year battery warranty with at least 70% capacity retention.
Manufacturers must demonstrate verified Science-Based Targets (SBTs) for emissions reduction across their product and supply chains. A two-tier sustainability assessment applies, with Band One offering the full £3,750 grant for cars that score highly on the government’s sustainability metrics, and Band Two offering a £1,500 grant for less sustainable vehicles meeting minimum standards.
The carbon intensity of battery cell manufacturing accounts for about 70% of the environmental scoring, with vehicle assembly contributing the remaining 30%. European-built EVs tend to have an advantage because the battery production in Europe generally has a lower carbon footprint compared to Chinese battery supply chains.
Citroen's European-built models have met these criteria, with the new Citroen e-C3's entry price now starting at £20,595, the Citroen e-C4 starting from £26,150, the Citroen e-C4 X priced from £27,215, and the Citroen e-Berlingo costing from £29,740. The upcoming new Citroen e-C5 Aircross family SUV will also receive £1,500 Level 2 support, with prices starting from £32,565.
In addition to meeting the ECG requirements, Citroen offers a 'We Care' package that covers the electric motor, onboard transmission, and all key electrical and mechanical components for up to eight years or 100,000 miles. This package, along with the eco-friendliness of both Citroen's vehicles and their battery production, is a factor in their approval for the Electric Car Grant.
No paperwork is required for the automatic application of the £1,500 Level 2 support in the purchase of a Citroen electric vehicle. This discount will be applied at the point of sale, making electric vehicles from Citroen even more affordable for UK consumers.
