China Approves First BCI Medical Device Standard, Aims for Global Leadership by 2030
China has made a significant stride in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. On September 16, the National Medical Products Administration approved the country's first industry standard for BCI medical devices. The standard, titled 'Terminology of Medical Devices Using Brain-Computer Interface Technology', defines key terms and concepts for BCI-based medical equipment.
The approval comes after a policy framework was issued in August by seven government departments. This framework sets ambitious targets for breakthroughs in key BCI technologies by 2027. The new standard will be effective from January 1, 2026.
The policy framework also aims to foster industrial growth in the BCI sector. It seeks to build industrial clusters, expand applications, and create globally competitive companies by 2030. This is a significant step towards China's goal of becoming a world leader in BCI technology.
The approval of the first industry standard for BCI medical devices in China signals a maturing of the country's BCI sector. The standard, along with the policy framework, sets a clear path for innovation and growth in this field. As the technology continues to advance, it promises to revolutionize medical care and treatment.
