The breach occurred between June 5 and June 18, with hackers exploiting vulnerabilities in two third-party file transfer tools. One of these tools was identified as MOVEit. Chess.com has not disclosed the specific information stolen or the extent of the breach, stating it affected fewer than 0.003% of users.
Founded in 2005, Chess.com hosts over 100 million registered users and facilitates 10 million games daily. Despite the breach, no banking information or member account details were compromised. The platform has been cooperating with federal law enforcement since the discovery.
A total of 4,541 Chess.com users had personal information exposed in the breach. While the platform has not specified the nature of the stolen data, it has assured users that no sensitive financial or account details were compromised.
