ChatGPT Surges in Adoption, Bridging Gaps Worldwide
ChatGPT, the AI language model, is seeing a surge in adoption worldwide, with users in middle-income countries embracing it faster than those in wealthier economies. A recent study by OpenAI reveals interesting trends in its usage patterns.
As of July 2025, about 10% of the global adult population uses ChatGPT. Notably, adults aged 18 to 25 are driving this growth, responsible for nearly half of all messages. This rapid uptake has helped bridge geographical and gender gaps in its usage.
The top uses for personal messages are seeking information and practical guidance. At work, professionals across industries primarily use it for writing and summarizing documents. Despite initial fears, ChatGPT usage is more practical and mundane, not leading to widespread automation or significant productivity gains, according to a working paper by David Deming.
Interestingly, the gender gap in ChatGPT adoption has closed. Users with traditionally female names now constitute just over half of all users. This shift reflects a broader trend of eased demographic gaps related to ChatGPT's usage.
ChatGPT's growth has been remarkable, outpacing even Google's historic growth to reach 1 billion daily messages in less than two years. Its users, predominantly acting as assistants and advisors, find it low-friction to ask for advice or feedback. As of June 2025, personal usage outpaces work-related usage, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all messages via consumer plans.
