Central/Eastern Europe Leads in Loyal Readers, Mobile Dominates in Q2 2022

The digital landscape in the second quarter of 2022 saw significant shifts in user behaviour and regional trends, as analysed by Chartbeat's real-time content analytics. Notably, Central/Eastern Europe became the first region to receive more than half of its page views from loyal readers.

Mobile devices remained the primary source of page views, with all regions maintaining at least 65% of their traffic from these devices for the fourth consecutive quarter. Africa led in social platform referrals, accounting for 23% of page views, followed by North America at 19%.

In terms of engagement, Africa topped the charts with an average engaged time of 39.2 seconds, closely followed by the Middle East at 38.6 seconds. This was a significant increase from the first quarter, with Africa seeing a 5-second rise and the Middle East nearly doubling its increase to almost 12 seconds. Central Asia and Southeast Asia also showed high mobile device usage, at 88% and 83% respectively.

Search referrals continued to dominate, with Google driving more traffic than Facebook. Central Asia saw 54% of its page views from search, followed by Southeast Asia at 44% and Africa at 34%.

Longer articles, potentially up to 2,000 words, could potentially add 30 seconds of engagement. Chartbeat's tools help media organizations understand and capitalize on these trends, enabling them to measure and build business value from their content in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
