Canada's Renewable Energy Surge: 10 GW Planned, Solar Boom Imminent
Canada is experiencing a surge in renewable energy procurement, with over 10 GW of projects planned in the coming years. This includes a significant solar project near Edmonton International Airport, set to come online in late 2025. Meanwhile, interest in balcony solar, a technology not yet available in Canada, is rising.
The country is on track to surpass the 314 MW of solar deployed in 2024. Behind-the-meter solar installations are particularly active, driven by rising power bills, favorable policies, and improved financing for home battery storage. Even Ontario, historically resistant to renewables, is showing increased interest in solar due to projected energy shortages.
Investment tax credits and energy supply shortages are key drivers for large-scale solar projects. Alberta reported 43 MW of behind-the-meter installations and 5 MW of distributed generation in the first half of 2025. Quebec, meanwhile, plans to deploy 3 GW of solar by 2035, starting with a 300 MW solar tender announced in May 2025.
The 112 MW solar project near Edmonton International Airport is expected to contribute significantly to Canada's renewable energy goals. As interest in behind-the-meter solar grows, provinces like Alberta and Quebec are leading the way, with more projects and installations planned in the coming years.
